In Memory

Gergo Verhas

We are deeply saddened to report news of the untimely death of Gergo Verhas in a climbing accident on Monday on Mt Rolleston, Arthurs Pass.

Gergo was a great friend and a valued member of the Auckland Orienteering Club. With his partner Kat, Gergo was the planner for the Lloyd Elsmore Summer Nav event held just last week.

Our thoughts and condolences go to Kat and their families in Hungary and friends.

Gergo’s passion and presence at events and contribution will be greatly missed. As a member of the Auckland Orienteering Club he continued his competitiveness in orienteering which he started as a young boy in Hungary. He actively participated and volunteered with the planning and running of many events in the Woodhill forest and closer to home. Gergo was a member of the organising committee for the popular Auckland Orienteering SummerNav series.  He freely shared his advanced IT skills and knowledge to support the club, his Hungarian orienteering club members, and at events.

Gergo was an active and passionate outdoorsman including orienteering, mountain biking, tramping, climbing, and skiing.

The Auckland Orienteering Club will look to organize a fitting event later this year in memory of Gergo our friend and his contribution.

The NZ Alpine Club have also offered their condolences and shared some information about his many alpine adventures and experience, including mentioning the Haute Route Pyrénéenne, an incredible 800km trek in Europe. Some of us were fortunate to see their great collection of photos and hear the talk he gave on the trek Gergo completed.
