The Auckland Orienteering Summer Series 2011-2012

Bronwyn and Imogene (Mother setter, controlled by daughter!) certainly made sure none of us went home tonight needing any more exercise! They took us to all the interesting little sites and the best views even if we did have to be mountain goats for some of the time! Thanks to you both for the great courses. The lead up was not all plain sailing for them as, having arrived nice and early to get out the controls for us they returned to their car on Hamlins Hill to find it had been locked in! This did somewhat delay the putting out of the controls but despite the set back they had it all ready to go by 5.30 - a great effort. It was lovely to welcome a first time orienteer this week - at the tender age of 7 weeks! She surely must be destined to become a great orienteer, starting so young!
Next week, on TUESDAY we return to the very great favourite venue of Cornwall Park/One Tree Hill. Please note the change to a TUESDAY, 22nd November. Registration is in the archery car park just beyond the end of Twin Oak Drive on the eastern side of the mountain. We are very grateful to have been given permission to use this wonderful park again this year after a break away from it. Please ensure that you respect the archeological and culturally sensitive sites while orienteering in this very special area.
Also don't forget tomorrow is The Great Ape Race AUCKLAND ZOO!! On line entries have closed but you can still enter on the day by turning up at the zoo at 5.30. This race is on to save the critically endangered orangutan from extinction - and all profits from this Great Ape Race will go to the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund to support the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP).
This fun evening event is a chance for you and your family, or friends or work mates to get a team together for an amazing race at the zoo - no experience required, just a commitment to team work! (but being an orienteer will certainly help!!) The 30-minute race for business/work teams and 45 minute race for family/social teams will get your heart pumping, your legs racing and push your brain into over-drive as you strategise to work out the fastest way to reach a number of destinations throughout the Zoo, answer questions correctly, and make it back to the Band Rotunda within the time limit. See http://www.lacticturkey.co.nz/GreatApeRace.htm for details.
