As always, it was with mixed feelings as we came to the end of the 22nd Auckland Orienteering Summer Series tonight - SummerNav as it has become this year. However as the last competitors emerged out of the darkness and we set out with headlamps to collect in the controls it did not need too much explaining why it was time to finish. Thanks to Annette for some great courses to end the season on. I believe it was a source of fascination to the cat which guarded a control on the edge of the map!
Although this was the last of the Summer Series events (until the end of October at any rate) it is just the beginning of an exciting lot of events throughout the rest of the year.
Within the city we have the night street events commencing in May. The programme will be out very soon but the first series will be Wednesday nights, with a mass start at 7pm - details to follow soon.
Then there will be a sprint series on Saturday afternoons, with starts form 4pm. These have short courses, ideal not only for competitive orienteers to use as sprint practice but Summer Series orienteers to do a course similar to course 3.
Spring will see the second of the Night street series and before you know it the 23rd SummerNav will be underway!!
However theses are just the City events - at least once a fortnight, if not every week there will be a Sunday morning event on the forests or farms on the outskirts of Auckland - This is where the fun really begins. All these events have courses suitable for all levels of fitness and experience so do come along and give some of these events a go this year.
The events coming up soon are
- This Sunday OY1 (CM) Huriwai, Port Waikato, starts between 10 and 12.30
- Sunday, April 25th. The first of a series hosted by NW, of 90 minute Rogaines, with proceeds going to assist their Juniors who have been selected for the Junior World Champs in Denmark later this year. As well as 4 foot rogaines there will be 2 mountain bike ones. These are planned to be fun events so check out the details on www.rogaineseries.co.nz
- Queens Birthday weekend - A weekend packed full of events, put on by AOC, NW and CM combined - This will be a pre entry event so watch the web site for details
And of course - VERY BEST WISHES TO ALL ORIENTEERS ATTENDING THE NATIONALS IN CENTRAL OTAGO OVER EASTER!!
AOC would love to hear from anyone with any suggestions of a place where we could store our equipment and/or campermatic at a reasonable cost. At present we have had to move into a commercial storage container (which is about the size required) but this is a very expensive so should anyone have a suggestion of a cheaper option that may be available we would be delighted to hear from you.
