Mangere Mountain - 18 Mar 10

ONLY ONE TO GO! Last SummerNav, next THURSDAY (25th) ONE TREE HILL - details of this and other events below

There was a touch of a feel of autumn in the air tonight as we stood around the event centre on Mangere Mountain but despite kind course setting by Rob and Ben (thank you both very much) I think most of us were decidedly hot as we wound our way up the mountain - somehow it seemed taller tonight! All courses were rewarded with some lovely views, however, particularly so as the sun began to set. We were most impressed by one of our very young competitors on course 4 who very deliberately chose a route choice which took him over the top of the mountain, just for the joy of going there - a top competitor in the making, that's for sure. We were also impressed by a young lad, quite new to orienteering who persevered to complete course 2. Orienteering on the volcanic cones is much more difficult than on some of our other park maps where there are lots of roads, tracks, gardens and building to use as reference points. On a map like Mangere mountain you really do need to read the contours on the map which requires true navigational skill so give yourselves a pat on the back if you are new to the sport and managed to complete your course without too many detours tonight.

Next week, for the finale of the SummerNav series we are on One Tree Hill, starting from Haydn Ave, off Manukau Rd, just down from the park entrance. We are very definitely finding that the days are getting shorter and it is getting hard to read the map by about 7.30pm. We will therefore make every effort to be set up ready to go by 5.00pm on Thursday and we would suggest that you do your best to get there as early as you are able and get out on your course as quickly as you can - it would be a shame to be caught out by the dark at the final event.
