NEXT WEEK - ELECTRONIC TIMING - TUESDAY - SELF'S FARM
Did you get finished before those high powered sprinklers got going tonight or did you get wet? Thank you to Bob and Selwyn for the courses tonight. It was fun running around where the horses often do. Also it was great to have a place where we could all park close to the start and finish. There was certainly a great turn out to enjoy a venue that has not been used for a while. A special welcome to all our overseas visitors and also to the newcomers to Auckland who have arrived for the start of the University year - we look forward to seeing you all at the events throughout the year.
Next week we are at Selfs Farm, Tidal Rd, Papatoetoe. The entrance is on the right angle bend just along from the motorway overbridge. You can access Tidal Rd from Massey Rd or Portage Rd. Again the event is on Tuesday (2 March). This is a private farm, a splendid place to orienteer - a volcanic crater but no mountain. We're using our electronic timing so those who own e-cards please bring them along. Those who don't know what this is about - come along and see - you'll love it. However do remember this is the equivalent to checking the clips - we'll see who doesn't do the controls in the correct order! If you eventually punch all the controls in the right order any controls that you punch in error do not matter. Please note there are no toilets near the map. Also this is a private working farm and we are very fortunate that Mr Self so generously allows us access to his land. Please respect the animals and leave all gates as you find them. If you are climbing a fence make sure you do so at a strainer post and a gate at the hinge end. The cows on this farm are always very inquisitive and will sometimes follow you. If you stop and say a friendly hullo they will stop too. They are harmless but full of character! Also don't get surprised if a plane seems to almost be within touching distance - you are very close to the airport and with the right wind direction you can do some great plane spotting! As this is a working farm - NO DOGS.
Get prepared for Saturday week when we have our first night event. This is at Ambury Park and the starts are from when it gets dark - about 8:30pm. Get those batteries charged up!
We heard that some people were confused tonight about what the control circle on the map indicates. The centre of the circle on the map shows where the control will be found. If you get to the place indicated by the centre of the circle you will find the control - it should not be hidden. If you can't find it, look at the control description - it may be you are on the wrong side of the hedge. Tonight there was a control which had a description of inside bend in hedge - if you went to the outside of the bend you'd not see the control and it was 20m to travel to get to the right place.
At Western Springs there was a cooler bag with freezer bags and water bottle left behind (banana too but I ate that). They can be collected from the campermatic.
